Inside Michelin starred London restaurant – Dudell’s by Michaelis Boyd

Amongst Hong Kong’s elite and favourite restaurant, Duddell’s has finally landed in London. This 2 Michelin-starred Hong Kong restaurant has opened its first London restaurant with huge impact where the restaurant interior design is as delectable as the food. This future Michelin starred London restaurant is at St Thomas Church in London bridge, a few steps from the looming Shard.

The restaurant’s Queen Anne exterior, high stained-glass windows, original dark timber wall panelling, and ecclesiastical altar set the tone for local firm Michaelis Boyd’s modern aesthetic inspired by traditional 1960s Hong Kong tea houses; set over two levels, bold green and blue-grey hues are revealed through leather banquettes, geometric rubber flooring, and a tiled central bar.

The studio inserted a freestanding volume into the ground floor to houses the dim sum kitchen and bar. Its vibrant green tiles recall the 1960s Cantonese teahouses found in Hong Kong. The retro vibe continues via leather banquettes and brightly coloured geometric rubber flooring, laid over the church’s existing timber floors, which peek through in parts.

The mezzanine level – which wraps around two sides of the restaurant – offers new perspectives of the space, with views down into the kitchen and bar area below, while colossal chandeliers crown the dining hall.

As with its Hong Kong sibling – founded in 2013 by Alan Lo, Paulo Pong and Yen Wong – this Michelin starred London restaurant is pitched as part restaurant, art gallery. Its walls are hung with contemporary artworks (which will be changed on a regular basis), while the menu is contemporary Cantonese, helmed by chef Daren Liew.
